Building a Self-Activating Redstone Obsidian Generator in Minecraft
Introduction
In this tutorial, we will learn how to build a self-activating redstone obsidian generator in Minecraft. This contraption, based on a bug found in Minecraft versions 1.7 and the latest snapshot for 1.8, allows you to turn redstone into obsidian by placing lava on top of it. Our design aims to automate the process, making it more convenient and slightly automated.
Background
The concept of the self-activating redstone obsidian generator was popularized by Mumbo in his Hermitcraft Let's Play series. Inspired by his idea, we have created a compact and reliable design that can be easily replicated by any Minecraft player.
Conceptualizing the Redstone Obsidian Generator
3.1 The Bug in Minecraft 1.7 and 1.8
The bug in Minecraft versions 1.7 and 1.8 allows the player to convert redstone into obsidian by placing lava on top of it. This bug has been exploited by players, and we aim to automate the process to make it more efficient.
3.2 Inspiration from Mumbo's Hermitcraft Let's Play
After watching Mumbo's Hermitcraft Let's Play, we decided to test his idea in a separate world. Our design is a variation of his concept but offers a more compact design. We obtained permission from Mumbo to create this tutorial based on his idea.
Building Requirements and Materials
To build the self-activating redstone obsidian generator, you will need the following materials:
- An area of land that is ten blocks wide, five blocks deep, and four blocks tall
- 19 pieces of redstone
- 10 redstone repeaters
- 9 hoppers
- 8 dispensers (with a bucket of lava in each)
- Sticky piston
- Redstone torch
- Water source
- 28 building blocks
- 10 blocks of glass (for visibility)
- 8 blocks of dirt (optional, for protection against accidental mining)
Step-by-Step Guide to Constructing the Redstone Obsidian Generator
5.1 First Layer
Start by placing a chest at the front left-hand corner of the designated area. Place a hopper pointing into the chest and eight hoppers pointing into each other to create a chain. Next, place two blocks behind the chain and a block in front, followed by a line of blocks across.
On the fourth setting, place two pieces of redstone and two repeaters facing towards the line of blocks. Connect a line of redstone to one side of the repeaters and place a torch on the other side.
5.2 Second Layer
Above the redstone torch, place a block and another block with a gap in between. Insert a repeater facing in the opposite direction on the default setting. Across the back, place eight blocks (which can be substituted with dirt for protection). On one end, place a sticky piston facing upwards and a block in front of it. Add a repeater facing forward.
5.3 Third Layer
Place a block on top of the sticky piston and a piece of redstone in front of it. Behind the redstone, position a repeater and set it to the fourth setting. Finally, add a water source to each block on this layer.
5.4 Final Layer
Put a block on top of the repeater and a piece of redstone behind it. Stack two more pieces of redstone on top of the blocks. Fill the front row of dispensers with lava.
5.5 Filling the Dispensers with Lava
Ensure all the redstone components are correctly placed by testing the generator. Once verified, fill each dispenser with lava.
Testing the Generator
To confirm the proper functioning of the self-activating redstone obsidian generator, carefully place all the redstone components as instructed. If everything is working correctly, the generator should produce obsidian automatically.
Conclusion
In this tutorial, we have learned how to build a self-activating redstone obsidian generator in Minecraft. By automating the process of converting redstone into obsidian, we have achieved a more convenient and efficient way to obtain this valuable resource.
