How to Create a Text Message Effect in Premiere Pro

Welcome to another tutorial from Flat Pack Effects! In this tutorial, I'm going to show you how to create a text message effect inside Adobe Premiere Pro. This effect is highly requested by many of our viewers, and I'm excited to share with you the step-by-step process.

Getting Started with the Text Message Effect

Before we begin, I want to mention that if you want to support our channel further or if you don't have time to complete the tutorial, I've created a Premiere template for this effect, which you can purchase via the link in the description. However, if you prefer to learn how to create this effect yourself, let's dive right in!

Creating and Animating the Text Bubble

The first thing you'll need to do is download the text bubble images. I've provided a link in the description for your convenience. Once you have the images, follow these steps to animate the text bubble:

3.1 Setting the Anchor Point

Start by importing the text bubble image into your Premiere Pro project. Drag the image onto the timeline and zoom in slightly for better visibility. To animate the text bubble, we need to set the anchor point. Depending on the version of Premiere you're using, you can manually drag the anchor point or use the Anchor Point controls in the Effects panel.

3.2 Scaling the Text Bubble

After setting the anchor point, create a scale keyframe at the start of the timeline. Then, zoom in slightly and create another keyframe at about 8 frames. Adjust the scale of the text bubble between these keyframes to create a bouncing effect. You can also right-click on the keyframe and use Bezier to smooth out the transition.

3.3 Adjusting the Opacity and Color

To make the text bubble slightly transparent, change the opacity to 70% in the Effects Controls panel. Additionally, you can change the color of the text bubble by using the Change to Color effect under Video Effects > Color Correction. Experiment with different colors and effects to achieve your desired look.

3.4 Adding the Text Layers

Now it's time to add the text layers. Depending on your version of Premiere, you can either right-click in the Project window and create a new title, or use the Type tool to draw a text box directly on the video. Scale down the text using the slider, and change the font to Helvetica Neue or any other font you prefer. Reposition the text to fit inside the text bubble.

Creating Multiple Text Bubbles

To create multiple text bubbles, follow these steps:

4.1 Duplicating the Sequence

Duplicate the sequence containing the first text bubble. If you're using Premiere Pro 2017 or later, simply duplicate the sequence and rename it to "Bubble 2." For Premiere Pro CS6, you'll need to duplicate the sequence and each text layer individually. Double-click the duplicated sequence to open it for editing.

4.2 Adjusting the Anchor Point and Color

In the duplicated sequence, adjust the anchor point of the text bubble to the opposite corner. You can also customize the color and other visual effects for a unique look.

4.3 Repositioning and Resizing the Text

Reposition the text layers to fit inside the new text bubble. You may need to adjust the size, position, and even the bubble itself to accommodate the text properly. Use the Motion controls to reposition the text and scale the bubble as necessary.

Editing the Text and Creating More Bubbles

If you want to edit the text or create additional bubbles, follow these steps:

5.1 Editing the Text

To edit the text, double-click the text bubble you wish to modify, and it will open up the nested sequence. Make the desired changes to the text and save the sequence.

5.2 Creating Additional Bubbles

To create more bubbles, follow the same process as before. Duplicate the desired sequence (e.g., Bubble 1), rename it to something like "Bubble 3," and modify the anchor point, text, and other settings. You can create as many bubbles as you need for your project.

Adding Footage behind the Text Bubbles

If you want to add footage behind the text bubbles, simply drag and drop the footage into your composition. The text bubbles will overlay the footage, creating an engaging effect.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You've learned how to create a text message effect in Adobe Premiere Pro. By following the step-by-step instructions, you can easily animate text bubbles and customize them to your liking. Experiment with different colors, styles, and effects to create unique and engaging messages in your videos.
