Introduction

Hey everyone, it's Reor Rebelinks here again with another character design challenge. Today's prompt was "molten mermaid" and I was so excited as soon as I saw it. Mermaid designs have always been a favorite of mine, and I couldn't wait to dive into this one. In this article, I'll take you through my process of creating my version of a molten mermaid. From choosing the prompt to the final touches, let's explore the making of this fiery character.

Choosing the Prompt

When I first saw the prompt "molten mermaid," I instantly knew it was the perfect challenge for me. Mermaids have always captivated my imagination, and the concept of a mermaid with a molten twist was too intriguing to pass up. I've done a couple of mermaid character design prompts in the past, but none of them gave me the opportunity to explore the fiery side of this mythical creature. So, without hesitation, I decided to go for it.

Inspiration and Research

Before diving into the design process, I wanted to gather some inspiration and do a bit of research. I looked up images and references of lava, volcanic rocks, and betta fish to get a sense of their colors, textures, and overall aesthetic. I wanted my mermaid to have a black betta fish vibe with cracks in her molten core, representing the hard rock-like exterior. While researching, I came across a fascinating story of hammerhead sharks living inside an active volcano. Although tempted to incorporate a lava shark concept, I ultimately stuck with the betta fish inspiration for its flowing tail and beauty.

Design Concept: Lava Mermaid

With the inspiration gathered, I began sketching out the base of my lava mermaid. I wanted her to have a droopy and thick appearance, giving the impression that she was on the verge of melting. Every aspect of her design was aimed at portraying intense heat and the feeling of imminent melting. Next, it was time to focus on the tail. The tail is always a favorite part for me when it comes to drawing mermaids, and I had so much fun crafting a tail that captured the essence of flowing lava.

Pros:

  • Unique and visually striking design
  • Represents the concept of molten mermaid effectively
  • Showcases the artist's creativity and imagination

Cons:

  • Missed opportunity to incorporate a lava shark concept

Designing the Base

Once I had a clear concept in mind, I started laying down the base of my mermaid. This involved creating a rough sketch to establish the overall pose and structure. I worked on ensuring that every aspect of her design reflected her fiery nature, with elements like dripping features and the impression of melting. The base served as a foundation for the detailed sketches that followed, helping me establish the main composition and character's overall aesthetic.

Creating the Sketches

With the base in place, it was time to bring my vision to life through clean sketches. I wanted the mermaid to have a contrast between her dark exterior and a vulnerable interior. The cracks in her body would convey a sense of a façade, hiding her true form underneath. The cracks also resembled tears, contributing to a slightly creepy and mysterious vibe. I paid special attention to the fins, aiming for a flowy appearance that would contrast with the rougher texture of the rest of her body. The clean sketches brought the character concept to life, with all the essential details in place.

Highlights:

  • Creating a droopy and thick design to emphasize the melting theme
  • Sketching a tail that accurately represents the flowing nature of lava
  • Incorporating cracks and tears to add depth to the character's design

Adding Details to the Lineart

Once satisfied with the sketches, I moved on to creating the lineart. One important aspect of the design I wanted to convey was the feeling of the dark parts of the character acting as armor. I wanted the cracks to resemble tears, suggesting that there may be something hidden beneath the surface. To achieve this effect, I focused on giving a grave-like appearance to the outer layer. The fins were also approached differently in comparison to the rest of the sketches, with a more fluid and flowy style. The lineart phase brought all the elements together, solidifying the character's overall look.

The Coloring Process

My favorite part of the entire drawing was the coloring process. I used the airbrush tool extensively to give everything a glowy and vibrant feel. Playing with different shades and hues, I brought the character to life by bringing in various colors representative of heat and fire. The deep navy blue for the skin and the bright shades evoked the essence of molten rock. One particular detail I enjoyed was adding a lighter blueish light to the tip of the tail, giving it a distinct appearance from the fins. The coloring process allowed me to highlight the character's intense heat and add depth to its design.

Bringing the Character to Life

To truly bring the character to life, I focused on adding those fiery finishing touches. I used the airbrush technique to create a transition effect from deep reddish-orange to lighter orange and yellow tones. This gave the impression of intense heat emanating from the character. Additional details, such as the tears, were highlighted using the same process, with a pale yellow color to create a vibrant glow. The character's skin was blushed with a lighter blue to add dimension and make it appear more three-dimensional. The final result was a captivating and fiery mermaid.

Adding the Fiery Finishing Touches

As I neared the completion of the artwork, I decided to include scales as a subtle yet essential detail. While time-consuming, I knew this would enhance the overall design. They might seem like a minor addition, but I felt that leaving them out would have left the final piece feeling incomplete. The scales were meticulously added, and additional highlighting was used to give them a glowy effect. Softening and fading them allowed the scales to blend seamlessly into the design while adding depth and texture.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Overall, I am extremely pleased with how this character design challenge turned out. The lava mermaid exceeded my expectations, capturing a unique combination of beauty and hardships. From the initial concept to the final touches, every step of the process was filled with excitement and joy. Revisiting the mermaid prompt reminded me of the magic and inspiration these mythological creatures hold.
