Introduction:

In times of power outages, having a reliable backup power source is crucial. Portable generators offer a convenient solution, but using them safely and efficiently requires the right equipment. The Reliance Controls Through the Wall Kit for portable generators provides an easy-to-install and safe method for connecting your generator to your home's electrical system. This kit allows you to power essential appliances like lights, refrigerators, and TVs during a power outage. In this article, we will explore the features and benefits of the Through the Wall Kit and provide a step-by-step installation guide.

The Need for a Portable Generator:

When faced with a power outage, having access to backup power is essential. Portable generators offer a reliable source of electricity to keep your essential appliances running until power is restored. Whether it's maintaining a comfortable living environment, preserving refrigerated food, or staying connected through communication devices, a portable generator ensures that you and your family can weather a power outage with ease.

Introduction to the Reliance Controls Through the Wall Kit:

The Reliance Controls Through the Wall Kit provides a safe and convenient way to connect your portable generator to your home's electrical system. This kit includes a six-outlet indoor power panel, an outdoor power cord inlet box, and all the necessary accessories for installation. By properly installing the Through the Wall Kit, you can power multiple appliances in your home using clean, dry extension cords.

Benefits of the Through the Wall Kit:

  1. Convenience: The Through the Wall Kit allows you to easily connect your portable generator to your home's electrical system. Once installed, you can power essential appliances without the hassle of running multiple extension cords throughout your home.

  2. Safety: The Through the Wall Kit ensures safe operation by providing a separate power panel for your generator. This eliminates the risk of overloading your home's electrical circuits and helps prevent electrical hazards.

  3. Easy Installation: The Through the Wall Kit comes with step-by-step instructions, making it simple to install. With common tools and a helper, you can complete the installation process without the need for professional assistance.

  4. Illuminated Power Panel: The indoor power panel features built-in LED lights, providing visibility in low-light conditions. This makes it easier to navigate and operate the panel during a power outage.

  5. Versatile Compatibility: The Through the Wall Kit is compatible with a wide range of portable generators, allowing you to choose the generator that best suits your needs.

Tools Required for Installation:

Before you begin installing the Through the Wall Kit, make sure you have the following tools handy:

  1. Power drill
  2. 1/4 inch drill bit
  3. Hammer
  4. Hacksaw
  5. Pliers
  6. Flat tip quarter-inch screwdriver
  7. Number two Phillips screwdriver
  8. Measuring tape
  9. Pencil
  10. Small amount of PVC cement
  11. Helper

Step-by-Step Installation Guide:

  1. Determining the Location for Indoor Power Panel:

    • Find a convenient location for the indoor power panel on your inside wall, about 19 inches from the floor.
    • Ensure the location is between wall studs and does not align with electrical lines or water/waste pipes.
  2. Preparing the Outside Wall for Installation:

    • Determine the location on the outside wall, directly opposite from the indoor location.
    • Ensure the location does not interfere with other outside objects or hookups.
    • Ensure there is enough room for the generator cord to be plugged into the power inlet box once installed.
  3. Drilling Holes and Installing PVC Conduit:

    • Drill a hole from the inside wall to the outside wall. Have a helper watch for the drill tip to break through.
    • Center the pointed tip of the 12-inch flat drill bit on the pencil mark on the inside wall and drill through.
    • Probe the interior wall for any obstructions before continuing to drill through the insulation.
    • Drill from the outside wall with the pointed tip of the drill, ensuring it aligns with the hole created from the inside wall.
    • Push the PVC conduit through both the interior and exterior walls until a few inches extend on each side.
  4. Mounting the Indoor Power Panel:

    • Straighten out the wires attached to the indoor power panel and fish them through the PVC conduit.
    • Push the inside end of the conduit tightly into the cradle on the back of the power panel.
    • With a helper holding the power panel against the inside wall, mark the conduit with a pencil 1/8 inch away from the outside wall's surface.
    • Position the power panel against the inside wall, aligning the four mounting holes with the wall anchors.
    • Insert the four white tip mounting screws and tighten them securely against the interior wall.
  5. Installing the Outdoor Power Inlet Box:

    • Remove the cover from the outdoor power inlet box and temporarily slide out the wiring tray.
    • Push the knockout hole washer into the 1/2 inch pre-cut knockout hole on the upper left back of the power inlet box.
    • Insert the threaded end of the PVC conduit fitting through the knockout hole and tighten it securely using pliers.
    • Fit the foam insulating rings over the conduit fitting for weatherproofing.
    • Fish the wires from the outside wall through the knockout hole and into the power inlet box.
  6. Wiring the Power Inlet Box:

    • Apply PVC cement to the inside surface of the PVC conduit protruding from the back of the power inlet box.
    • Connect the wires to the set screw holes in the base of the power inlet plug fixture (green wire to G, white wire to W, black wire to X, red wire to Y).
    • Push the wires all the way into the terminals and tighten the set screws securely.
    • Slide the wiring tray back into the power inlet box and replace the cover, tightening the two long screws.
