Introduction

Happy Hump Day, everybody! Welcome to another Workshop Wednesday. Today, we'll be discussing a generator that has piqued the curiosity of many - the ecoflow Smart Generator. I have been receiving numerous questions about my power generation setup, specifically regarding what I use outside of solar. In order to give you an accurate and comprehensive review, I have thoroughly tested this generator before sharing my insights. Let's dive into the details!

About the ecoflow Smart Generator

The ecoflow Smart Generator is a 2000-watt dual fuel inverter generator. What sets it apart from other models is its ability to run on both propane and gasoline. While I have yet to utilize the propane feature due to the hassle of carrying an additional bottle, I acknowledge its superiority as a fuel since it does not age like gasoline. However, given my usage pattern of running the generator every two or three days, I am not concerned about gasoline varnishing.

Dual Fuel Capability

The dual fuel capability of the ecoflow Smart Generator provides flexibility and convenience. Users can choose between propane and gasoline as their preferred fuel source. While propane offers benefits such as longer shelf life and cleaner burning, the ease and availability of gasoline make it a popular choice as well. This hybrid functionality allows users to select the most suitable fuel option based on their specific needs, location, and preferences.

Symbiotic Relationship with the ecoflow Delta Pro

One of the main reasons I opted for the ecoflow Smart Generator is its compatibility and symbiotic relationship with the ecoflow Delta Pro. The Delta Pro serves as the lifeblood of my power storage system, and the Smart Generator complements it seamlessly. This synergy is where the term "smart generator" comes into play. When the Delta Pro's battery percentage reaches the user-set threshold, the generator automatically starts, replenishes the system, and then shuts itself off. This hands-free feature eliminates the need for constant monitoring and intervention, allowing for uninterrupted power supply.

The "Smart" Functionality

The "smart" aspect of the ecoflow Smart Generator extends beyond its symbiotic relationship with the Delta Pro. When the generator and the Delta Pro are connected, they can communicate with each other. This communication ensures efficient and optimized charging cycles, preserving battery health and extending overall system longevity. The coordinated operation of these devices takes power generation to a whole new level of convenience and intelligence.

Technical Specifications

Let's delve into the technical specifications of the ecoflow Smart Generator. The unit itself weighs 65 pounds when fully loaded. At idle, it produces a noise level of 60 decibels, while at wide-open throttle, the noise level increases to 75 decibels. With a fuel capacity of one gallon, the generator can provide approximately two full charges of the Delta Pro using a single tank of fuel. It's important to note that while the generator may initially seem fuel inefficient due to its high fuel consumption during fast charging, this is offset by the reduced charging duration.

Reliability and Performance

In terms of reliability, the ecoflow Smart Generator has exceeded my expectations. It has consistently started and run flawlessly, providing consistent power in varying conditions. I have used it at sea level as well as at higher elevations of up to 9,200 feet without any issues. It has become a reliable source of power for my editing work and keeps my battery system adequately charged throughout extended periods of use.

Concerns: Electric Start and Engine Longevity

While the overall performance of the ecoflow Smart Generator has been excellent, I have encountered a minor issue with the electric start feature. It seems that the starter does not spin the engine fast enough during the initial start-up attempts. As a result, the generator requires manual pull-starting after multiple failed attempts with the electric start. However, once the engine is running, it performs flawlessly, starting on the first try when using the electric start feature. To address this issue, I plan to fine-tune the carburetor to optimize performance in varying elevations.

Occasional Hiccups and Fuel Issues

On rare occasions, I have noticed the generator experiencing minor hiccups and fuel-related issues. While it runs flawlessly for extended periods, there have been instances where it suddenly starts to hiccup and experience fuel-related problems. However, after unplugging and restarting the generator, it returns to normal operation without any issues. These occasional hiccups could be attributed to slight fuel delivery inconsistencies. Nevertheless, these occurrences have been infrequent, and overall, the generator's performance remains satisfactory.

Warm-up and Cool-down Process

One aspect that could be improved in the ecoflow Smart Generator is the warm-up and cool-down process. When starting the generator, it quickly jumps from zero to 5000 RPM, which is faster than desired. To mitigate this, I manually let it idle for about a minute before connecting any devices. On the other hand, when the battery charge reaches 90 percent, the generator automatically reduces its RPM to approximately half. It further decreases to idle RPM when the battery reaches 100 percent charge, before shutting down. While this process may serve as a cool-down measure, I would appreciate a slightly longer warm-up and cool-down period built into the generator's software.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In conclusion, the ecoflow Smart Generator has proven to be a reliable and efficient power generation solution for my needs. Its seamless integration with the ecoflow Delta Pro and the intelligent charging capabilities make it a standout product in the market. Despite minor concerns with the electric start and occasional hiccups, the generator has performed exceptionally well. As I continue to explore the device's capabilities, I may delve deeper into troubleshooting and optimizing its performance. However, at this point, I remain highly satisfied with its overall functionality and hands-free operation.
