Merging Pokemon and Zelda: The Perfect Adventure Combination
The world of gaming has given us some iconic franchises throughout the years. As a fan, there are certain adventures that have left a lasting impact, shaping our childhood memories and becoming part of our lives. For me, two franchises stand out among the rest – Pokemon and The Legend of Zelda. The thrill of exploring dungeons in Zelda's mythical realm and discovering rare creatures in Pokemon's vast wilderness resonated with me on a deeper level. So, I embarked on a project to merge these two beloved worlds and create a seamless adventure for fans like me.
Creating Starter Pokemon: Deku, Goron, and Zora
To bring together these two universes, the first step was to design starter Pokemon that would serve as the stepping stones to this epic journey. It was essential to ensure that the Pokemon designs aligned with the aesthetics and themes of Zelda. Instead of the traditional animal-based designs, I opted for Pokemon inspired by the inhabitants of Hyrule.
3.1 Deku Starter: The Timid Forest Dweller
The Deku starter captures the essence of the shy and mysterious Deku Scrubs found in the Zelda universe. Mixing elements of familiar shading patterns and techniques with my own unique style, the Deku Pokemon becomes a timid creature made of wood and leaves. They love to shoot seeds at unsuspecting victims, adding a mischievous touch to their personality. Imagine traversing the woods as Link and encountering these little Deku Pokemon popping out of the grass, spitting seeds at you.
3.2 Goron Starter: The Playfully Silly Rock Monster
The Goron starter embodies the playful and silly nature of these rock-dwelling creatures. I wanted to capture the essence of what a baby or child Goron might look like, showcasing their rough exterior and mischievous side. Meet "Gorlit," the Goron Pokemon, rambunctious yet friendly. They inhabit Death Mountain and have a peculiar diet – molten rocks that fly out of the mountain. Rolling around is their way of getting exercise. With a strand of fire on their head and an adorable habit of picking their nose, Gorlits will bring a lighthearted touch to the adventure.
3.3 Zora Starter: The Energetic Water Guardian
The Zora Starter draws inspiration from iconic Zora characters, such as Princess Ruto from Ocarina of Time and Prince Ralis from Twilight Princess. The goal was to create a cute and cheerful Pokemon that exemplifies the Zora's skill in swimming. Introducing "Zorrell," the Zora Pokemon. These Zora Pokemon are highly skilled swimmers and willingly share their talents with humans they respect. They despise cold water and will go to great lengths to avoid it. Zorrell incorporates elements from the game Sonic Adventure Battle, particularly the "swim chao," combining the charm of both franchises. Sporting floppy ears, little flippers, and a purple collar, Zorrell exudes cuteness and happiness.
