Lightning struck the telephone poles in front of our house, damaging the phone bank and disrupting our internet connection. It is not uncommon for such incidents to occur in our area, as we are situated in the lightning capital of the country. Despite the inconvenience, we have learned to adapt and find solutions to ensure uninterrupted access to essential services.

AT&T as Our Internet Carrier

AT&T is the carrier that provides internet services to our area. Although they do a commendable job when it comes to delivering a reliable connection, there are times when their response to repair issues is not as prompt as we would like. Unfortunately, they have informed us that they will not be able to look into our internet connection issue until Sunday. This, of course, does not guarantee an immediate fix, but it is our only option for internet service in the area. While their service is generally dependable, the frequency of lightning strikes in our region makes it a challenge to maintain a consistent connection.

The Generator Project

With the constant threat of lightning-induced power outages, we decided to take matters into our own hands and invest in a generator. After careful consideration, we purchased the Home White 5500 generator. This model is capable of running most of our household appliances and essentials during an outage. However, we soon discovered a drawback - the generator did not come with a wheel kit, making it difficult to move around.

The Wheel Kit Dilemma

Realizing the need for portability, I decided to find a solution for attaching wheels to the generator. I visited Harbor Freight to explore my options and came across a set of small wheels on sale for a bargain price. While they were Chinese-made and not of the highest quality, I believed they would serve the purpose well. Additionally, I found a piece of galvanized steel from an old chain-link fence that could be repurposed as the axle for the wheels. Determined to make do with what I had, I decided to proceed with the assembly.

Building the Axle for the Generator

To construct the axle, I cut the piece of galvanized steel to the required length. I then attached rubber feet to each end of the axle to prevent the wheels from slipping. Using a plastic washer and a cotter pin, I secured the wheels to the axle, ensuring a tight fit. Although I could have purchased washers specifically designed for this purpose, I decided to repurpose items I had on hand. This not only saved me money but also allowed for a sustainable approach to the project.

The Materials Used for the Axle

Being resourceful, I utilized a piece of galvanized steel from an old chain-link fence as the foundation for the axle. Additionally, I repurposed rubber feet and a plastic washer that I had found among my collection of nuts and bolts. While these materials may not be conventional, they were suitable for the task at hand. This demonstrates the importance of utilizing what is available and being creative with limited resources.

Installing the Wheels

Once the axle was built, I proceeded to install the wheels on the back side of the generator frame. This placement ensured that the rubber tires would not be exposed to excessive heat from the muffler during operation. I secured the wheels using cotter pins, ensuring that they would not slide off or become loose while in use. The axle provided the much-needed mobility to the generator, making it easier to transport from the shop to the house whenever required.
